Don Wakamatsu has become the first Asian-American manager in Major League Baseball after accepting the job offer from the Seattle Mariners. Wakamatsu spent last year as the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics and before that spent five years with the Texas Rangers. The 45-year-old spent nearly his entire professional playing career in the minor leagues but did catch 18 games in a Chicago White Sox uniform in 1991, all those games when knuckleballer Charlie Hough was on hill. Soccer’s three-time World Player of the Year Ronaldo has remained non-committal about his future, stating he may retire rather than try to prolong his storied career. The 32-year-old Brazilian legend ruptured a tendon in his left knee while playing for AC Milan in February. As Sri Lanka’s government forces continue to clash with Tamil Tiger rebels the number of people displaced in the northern Wanni region has reached hundreds of thousands and Amnesty International is now appealing to both government and rebels to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. Amnesty International has said those displaced are in desperate need of food and shelter as well as safe water. The international organization has warned that the situation could be catastrophic if something isn’t done soon as Sri Lanka faces the looming monsoon season. The Tamil Tigers hold a strong presence in the northern area and the government Amnesty has said the government is not capable of delivering aid to those in need. Amnesty has asked that the two sides allow monitors into the area to assess the needs and ensure the aid reached the displaced. The Saudi Arabian owners of the oil tanker Sirius Star that was hijacked on Saturday have reportedly begun negotiating with the Somali pirates that are now holding the vessel and its 25-member crew. It is unclear if the negotiations include talks of a ransom but there has been a report that the pirates were demanding $250 million for the release of the tanker. The ship was carrying two million barrels of oil worth more than $100 million when it was hijacked off the coast of Kenya. Saudi Arabia has condemned the act of piracy and said they do not support negotiations with terrorists but admitted the decision ultimately rests with the owners of the Sirius Star. Rose Kabuye, chief of protocol for Rwandan President Paul Kagame, has been extradited from Germany to France where she stands accused of triggering the 1994 genocide in Rwanda that left more than 800,000 dead, Last week Kabuye arrived at the Frankfurt airport to prepare for meetings that Kagame was to attend. As she entered the airport she was taken into custody by German officials who were acting on a French arrest warrant. Kagame criticized the arrest, saying Kabuye was in Germany on official business and was not subject to the arrest warrant. France has accused Kabuye of playing a role in the downing of former Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana’s plane in 1994. That act is believed to have led to the slaughter that ensued where Tutsis and moderate Hutus were targeted by Hutu militia. Kabuye has denied any involvement in the attack on the plane. Actress Winona Ryder was briefly hospitalized Wednesday. Ryder fell ill on a flight to London and was taken to a hospital when the plane landed. Last night on Dancing with the Stars, the one of the semifinalists was eliminated from the competition. It came as no surprise that ‘Hannah Montana’ star Cody Linley was eliminated from the competition.
